I am also facing the same problem.
I am a qualified accountant with approx. 4 years audit experience in a Big 5 firm. In addition, I am also a CFA Level 3 candidate.
I am now working in a listed internet investor in HK (not purely dot com) (3 months experience) and I am now offered a junior equity research analyst post in a european bank. should I take it?
Is it really that difficult for a research analyst to get into Direct Inv or VC field?

Perhaps you could move to hedge fund industry, an alternative to VC/DI but equally sexy field, after spending some years in research.
