In Reply To: I guess I agreed with the other other poster insofar as comparative advantage helps all parties involved (generally speaking, of course). Sending jobs to India is not comparative advantage, even though it's mistakenly called that. Labor arbitrage comes from absolute advantage, which is what Hewitt and other major corporations participate in. I agree with you regarding the speed of transition. And, I also agree that tax law has been abused to encourage US employers to move jobs overseas. So has immigration law. It is a free-for-all right now, and the commom good is taking a back seat to quarterly earnings targets.
Message: was it that helped the Japanese clean the clocks of all US auto manufacturers? The first Japanese imports back in the 60's were junk. People bought them because they were cheap. Detroit laughed and complained to Washington. Then lo and behold, the Japanese imports started to win on quality. Now you pay a premium for a Toyota or Honda, and whether those cars are made in Japan or the US, the profits go to Japan. Now the Koreans are starting to do the same thing. Quality of US made and sold autos is slipping again, and the companies are on the verge of bankruptcy. Yet, GM, Ford, and Chrysler all make and sell high-quality vehicles overseas. They are all also heavily unionized. So, please tell me again how unions are good for us and globalization is bad. Isn't about just using your head and being willing to work harder and smarter than the next guy whether he or she is next door or around the world?
