There are many trade unions here in the UK. Some are more subtle than others... arguably the Institute of Actuaries has many of the hallmarks of a union, e.g. entrance requirements and tests which guarantee a quality of work; (in practical terms) what used to be called apprenticeships/ learning on the job; membership dues; an internal disclipinary code; links with similar organisations; lucrative specialist roles, reserved by law... The trick is to join one of these "subtle" unions to ensure a decent living, while discouraging others from joining less refined organisations that might push up one's own living costs or business expenses.
