I'm not the only one in my position. Many experienced IT people have been out of work more than a year. There is severe age discrimination in the IT field after the age of 50. In addition, the field is always changing, and those who are hiring only want people with several years experience in their specific applications. When I asked IT recruiters if they could recommend any courses, they replied that it would be a waste of my money, since employers only want people experienced in the specific applications. This is also a problem for people just starting out in the IT field. I have seen ads for people with "up to 19 years experience"! |

Hi Gaia.
I am a freelance journalist and I'm doing a writing project about hunting for jobs in the technology age. I was wondering if you would be willing to talk about your experience with me off-line.
I promise, this is totally legit. You can e-mail me at gee_gadua@yahoo.com and we can go from there.
I would appreciate it.
