Message: I am in my mid-50's. I have always been interested in the health field. When I applied to University of Alabama in Birmingham to get a master's in public health and/or epidemiology, they were very interested in me, but I couldn't get a job in Birmingham. Now, I wish I had gotten a student loan, but I hate to borrow money. At this point in my life, I especially don't want to borrow money to get a degree, then not be able to find a job. I have 30 years experience as a computer programmer and an M.A. in math. My bosses and co-workers have been admiring of my abilities. I scored at the 99.93 percentile on my GRE. So I feel that my current job waiting tables at Waffle House is not the best use of my talents. Is there some field of medicine that I could study which would pay enough to support myself and pay back my loan, and could find a job when I was almost 60? My family lives a long time, so I could expect to put my training to use.
