Siko - out of curiousity - what industry are you currently in and why are you interested in studying psychology? i'm asking because I am interested in psychiatry. |

There are many reasons - I am a corporate lawyer (I could end there) and am interested in providing direct service that is personal and meaningful to individuals, something that I consider valuable, helping people function better or deal with personal conflicts and issues, rather than morally neutral (or empty) and indirect contributions to the financial well-being of a business, formalizing a relationship by contract or creating order out of administrative chaos. I am also interested in the body of knowledge of psychology and research and possibly teaching.
I see psychology as a blend of personal and community service, academic study and professional expertise in a challenging yet rewarding field. I appreciate the fact that it is a science and that techniques of counseling are backed by actual study in the field, and that the body of knowledge continues to grow and be refined and provide new areas of exploration. The human mind and body are fascinating and mastering even a small fraction of this body of knowledge excites me.
My understanding of psychiatry is that there is less focus on conducting research (though psychiatrists are of course drawing upon the existing research in reaching diagnoses and choosing medicines to prescribe). However, that is a broad generalization. Why are you drawn to psychiatry?
