Hi, I'm currently a senior in college and will be joining an investment bank when I graduate. I've recently started to reevaluate my career goals and am considering going to a postbac premed program in a few years. I was wondering how competitive the admissions process is for these programs and what type of candidates they look for. I plan on doing a lot of volunteer work with health orgs. over the next two years to show my interest in the healthcare field. Is this enough considering I will also be working 70-90 hour work weeks and I have a 3.7 GPA from a third-tier school and great extracurriculars? Thanks so much! |

I was intrigued to read your message. I too am considering a career shift, and need to take lots of prereqs to do so, but in psychology instead of medicine. I'm doing a lot of soul searching and trying to talk with as many practitioners as I can to get a feel for whether this is the right career path for me. I would say to you that you will find it very difficult to take classes or do volunteer experience while working at the i-bank, unless times have changed significantly, so if it's really what you want to do, you may need to just go for it. However I understand the money aspect as well. Good luck to you. FYI, Columbia has a post-bac program in medicine.
