Hi,
I am 32 y/o with a bs in chemical engineering, worked in food research for a year, then IT field the last 3.5 years. The company I worked for went under. Since then, IT jobs have been hard to find. This job insecurity has prompted to think about changing my career into healthcare. Another problem is my wife is pregnant and I can't be thinking of a career switch now in this economy. But even if I stick with IT, there are currently no jobs out there. I feel like I'm in a job limbo here.
Med school has always been at the back of my mind. I know I should have applied before, but was always concerned about the length of school, and not having any income for 4 years, and 80-90 hr work weeks for 3 years as a resident. Only thing is, it is a secure job, and you won't be subjected to economic swings.
But right now, being 32 y/o with pregnant wife and unemployed, I seriously don't know what to do. I wanted to start taking my science prereqs so I could apply to med school, but the thought of going to school full-time and not having any income (besides my wife's) for the next 4 years while my child is growing up is very scary to me. I know our expenses will go up since we're now having a baby. It would have been a different scenario without the baby as my wife can somehow meet our monthly living expenses. But now with 3 people, there's no way we can make it without me at least getting a part-time job while going to med school.
Is there anything I can do so that I can satisfy both my desire for a new career and make sure that we have enough money to pay for our living?
Any advice as to best course of action? Should I forget about medicine and maybe look into an alternative career that's easier to accomplish, given my circumstances, but as equally lucrative and stable a career as medicine? Is this even possible for me at this point?
Thank you for any ideas or advice you can share with me, I am feeling really down. |
