I am a second year medical student studying in Israel. I know that there are a number of spots in general surgery that are not being filled, mainly because of "lifestyle"
I read several articles in the Archives of Surgery addressing this trend. I am not sure if this is a time to run from the field or a time to get in there while student still percieve it to be a hard lifestyle.
I love medicine and all of its different areas, i am someone that can see myself doing just about everything. Surgery attracts me because it is interesting, and its a step towards a field which I think is a great one vascular surgery. If there are any surgeons out there who can help give me some insight into the career, I would appreciate it.

I am a medical student in the US. We are having what is perceived to be a serious problem in medicine. For the past few years we have pushed students to go for primary care medicine so many of them are not going into surgical fields. Many positions are being left open. In fact, they are predicting a crisis in the next few years if more students do not do surgery. So I guess this is probably a good time to join the profession.
