In Reply To: Would anyone tell me the avg salary and respect that Physician Assistants get from Dr's and other healthcare professionals..?? I will be graduating MAY 2003 and could graduate DEC 2002 with a BA but have seriously thought about changing my plans. I have thought about trying Med school, but my confidence level of completing the pre-reqs with decent grades isnt very high, considering I took time off and went to the Navy..Any advice??? maybe I watch too much Trauma, who knows..But Im very interested in healthcare, and I feel that law is not for me considering Im not very fond of writing..Ive also considered a post-bacc program....Any Words of Wisdom
Message: I had the same thoughts 12 years ago as I was finishing my first year of law school. I decided to go to medical school and signed up for all the prereqs. Then as I thought about it more, I decided it wasn't worth it since I could finish law school before even starting medical school. BAD CHOICE! After 12 years of wishing I was in medicine, I'm finally going to go back to school this summer and go to PA school. If I were you, I'd apply to both. the average acceptance rate for PA school is only 5% nationwide, as compared to about 60% for medical school, so it might even be easier to get into med. school. As for respect, it's true that you are always under someone's elses "supervison" as a PA, and sometimes patients don't respect you as much. However, I had known many people that are very happy being a PA and have a lot of autonomy in their work. I think it very much depends on the doctor you work with and their attitude towards it. Bottom line, don't stay in a career you don't like and just choose either PA or medical school based on which you think you'd enjoy more. Good luck!
