I have decided to pursue the Med School track. I'm taking classes next semester to get the prereqs under my belt. I look at this site and read some of the things people who are doctors say about the profession and how much it is changing and how much they don't like it and I'll admit it scares me. I would hate to spend the next 6 years of my life becoming an MD (in title anyway, if not in salary) and hate it. But, I can't see myself hating it.
So then I thought about it. There are Vault Message Boards for practically every type of career. The law board is filled with people complaining about their profession. The same with the finance board, the consulting board, the marketing board, etc.etc. The Health Care board, however, is quite small. Well, why do people come to Vault anyway? I don't think people who love their jobs, or the careers come to this type of website. It's the people who are think the grass is greener that visit Vault.
I'm going to start doing volunteer work at a local hospital to get a better feel for it all. The smells, the illnesses, the death, the pain, the gross stuff, and the healing, the happiness, the helping, the relief, the trust, etc.
I just know that I can't keep going the way I am in the field I'm in. |

RJW524,
Good for you - you must be relieved that at least you've made the decision and are no longer vascilating or uncertain about your future. Are you going to complete a specific post-bac, pre-med program, or are you just going to take classes locally? I agree that the volunteer idea is a great one. Are you going to continue working while taking the prereqs?
I'm still debating, but am going to apply to a couple of post-bac programs, to give myself the option if I have the guts to make the move. It helps to hear about others in similar situations - please share your experiences if you are so inclined.
Thanks and good luck.
