I am a resident physician with plans to graduate from an ENT (ear, nose and throat) residency in June 2000. I am interested in a major career switch involving consulting, banking or venture capital. I am applying to the Harvard, Wharton, Stanford MBA programs for fall 2000.
Any thoughts on the proposed plan from those with a similar experience personally or the experience of colleagues/friends that have made such a move?
Lastly, any insights on the likelihood of admission? My numbers are GPA 3.65 - U of Michigan ('91), M.D. U of Michigan Med School ('95), GMAT 730/5.5. My guess is that my essays are solid but not extraordinary.

Fazlur,
Your likelihood of admission if probably very high, considering your education and experience. The question is why are you leaving ENT after so much training and when all that training is about to pay off? There seems to be an absolute tidal wave of MD's flooding into banking, consulting, equity research in life science related industries. Contrary to what many believe, compensation is not really better in finance than in a specialty, except in extreme cases, especially when viewed over the long-term and adjusted for riskiness. I'm just wondering what is driving this trend.
