I??m an MD with an interesting problem. Maybe some of you can help me. I would like lots of opinions from all sides of the table.
I graduated from medical school last year. All through, I wasn??t really jazzed about clinical medicine, and instead I got really involved and interested in business. I was smart, ambitious, and hardworking. I looked at the interns, residents, and the burnt-out, beat-down staff and I thought, ??this isn??t for me.?? So I decided to pursue a business career instead.
I started at a healthcare technology firm about seven months ago, and I gotta tell you, it??s not jazzing me either. Pretty boring stuff, and a lot of people are burnt-out and beat-down as well. I??m a manager in the firm but I really don??t feel like it??s going anywhere. I often think to myself, ??I??m a doctor ?? why am I wasting my time doing this crap??? I??m still interested in some things business-related, like healthcare venture capital and private equity, but that will take a couple more years of work experience and an MBA, both of which are a significant investment.
I am feeling a bit of a pull back to clinical medicine. If I did return, I don??t know what I??d do ?? five years of specialty residency seems like a hell of a long time. Plus, cutting my salary in half sounds like a raw deal. What may be an option is finding another job which is more interesting ?? and if it still sucks, then going back to clinical medicine.
I would especially appreciate perspectives from physicians who have left medical practice for business. Which did you find more satisfying? What would you do now, knowing what you do? I know a collective decision can??t be made for me, but some ideas would be great.
