And what computer background did you have?
I am a senior medical student and am thinking of making a career switch... I have extensive computer background and would like to explore the field of healthcare IT.
Any ideas, hints or contacts you may be willing to share?
Thanks!!

In the summers after 1st and 2nd years I did research projects for the Informatics (Medical IT) department of a big teaching hospital.
In clerkship I had three elective blocks. I did the first one in clinical medicine, just to make sure I didn't like it. For the second, I went to Stanford and did their 'Medical Informatics Short Course' and a three-week research project. I then came back home (Toronto) and did three weeks at a local healthcare IT startup. For the third block, I worked in healthcare venture capital.
No real computer background, just on-the-fly experience. I bet your teaching hospital has an informatics department run by a doc - give them a call. Or look at the universities and do a research elective in informatics. Bottom line: as a physician you will have a lot of value in this industry.
