In Reply To: i gave one of the earlier posters on this thread and have read some responses wit interest. I have just entered consulting after several years working as a surgeon in a v good specialty high cost per procedure and a very closed shop. the mds above that go on about mega bucks and job security are living in the past. And are also extremely defensive and obviously scared about the changes occuring in medicine (sticking your head in the sand). Alot of what they are saying is coming from what their current bosses are earning now and have earned in the last 10 years. Im telling you the truth having been on both sides of the fence the medical gravy train has stopped. Managed care and corporatisation has ensured this. your bosses are currently earning big bucks and are being courted by large firms which will give them bigbucks to buy them out then salary them. This is great if you have 5 years to retirement and can cash out, but if you are training now you WILL ALWAYS be on a salary. Im not saying medicine is not a great career for the right person. compare dollar for hours and lifestyle and it sucks. Please dont bullshit to up and coming docs by promising them big bucks when in reality they are going to do big hours, alot of on-call for average cash.
Message: if "average cash" alludes to what is the highest paid profession, on average, in the United States, you might want to look up "average." You've made a common error: comparing previously obscene salaries earned by MD's to what are now merely excellent salaries.
