In Reply To: Hello there. I'm a recent grad, '02 in International Studies and Spanish from the University of Chicago. I have a had a couple of different jobs in law/business since graduation, and am now looking to become a doctor. I need to do one of those 1 year post ba programs and wanted to know if anyone who's applied could give advice concerning entrance requirements. I had a 3.5 GPA undergrad and think that with proper preparation I could do very well on the MCATs. If I do, are top med schools still within my reach? Anyone else gone from lib arts undergrad on to grad school?
Message: I too was a 02 graduate in Business, and after working for about a year and a half, I decided that I wanted to be a Dentist. I returned to school last year and I should be finished with my pre-dental requirements at the end of this year. If I were you, I would "definitely" be sure that this is what you want to do. There have been a few times when it has been very stressful, and I have doubted my decision to return to school. I have done very well in all my pre-dental classes, but I can honestly say that this is the hardest I have ever had to work. As a business major my classes were not nearly this difficult, and if you are not completely committed, you may not have the grades to get into med school (they make the classes competitve so that the majority of the students get Cs which wont get you into any Med school). Also, taking all of the classes in one year can be suicide. I decided to stretch it out over a year and a half, but I am not in a traditional post ba. If you can do a traditional post ba, that would be best. It's a lot of time, money, and stress, so make sure it's what you want. I'm not saying this to scare you, but I'm just being honest. I think the reason that I have done so well is because I have a real desire to be a Dentist. Best of luck in the future! Feel free to ask me any questions.
