My ultimate goal is PE. I'm not overly focused on fund size though. I'm more concerned with the overall experience. I want to work for a firm where I can take an active role in the strategy of the portfolio companies and maybe even business development activities.
I know some firms focus on this more so than others...ie turnaround & LBO shops. The middle market PE firm I have an offer from doesn't do much of this so I think my decision comes down to two things.
1) Go to the middle market PE for 2 to 3 yrs, then to b-school, and then to a more strategy focused PE shop after b-school
or
2) Go into a GS/MS type of role for 2yrs, then into a strategy focused PE shop for 2yrs, and then to b-school. After b-school return to same PE shop.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Much appreciated. |

I think I would be echo-ing what other ppl are saying on this board when I say go down the PE route if this is what you ultimately want to do. "A bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush"...
Remember, there is no guarantee that you will get into a KKR-caliber firm after two yrs at GS. In fact, it is extremely selective, with these guys taking 2 people each year out of >100 applicants.
