and I can see how you might feel unprepared for PE with no prior banking experience. However, if you're nervous about the lack of training or experience I have a suggestion: try and obtain some training manuals/program material from a GS/MS/etc. and work through it on your own time.
My rationale is that the best analysts obviously end up at the best PE shops. You will be learning alot of specialized modeling on the fly at work and you will need great modeling skills, but if you can obtain a good base knowledge on your own, the experienced analysts at your firm can help you until the rubber really hits the road. So in that respect, personally I'd go straight to PE. You might flail around at first, but you will do that in banking, also. The learning curve at both is probably equally as steep.
