Here's the straight scoop from an "expert". I have done numerous background checks and investigations.
1) Be honest about your "incident". It may seem like a big deal to you now, but pissing on a bush is not really an indicator of potential future bad behavior. A crime of trust, e.g., theft, embezzlement, forgery will mark you for life.
A tip... drop the part about "townie cops" and any type of language that looks like you are putting the blame on anyone but yourself.
As a hiring manager, I'm more interested in hearing you take personal responsibility for the issue.
2) Lying on resumes. NEVER do this unless you are planning to work at lemonade stand. Many companies are using outside investigative firms such as Sutton Associates to do background checks. Many firms are "regional" and keep up-to-date information about colleges and local organizations so they can do quick checks.
I have seen many people fired for lying on a resume.
3) If you are planning on employment in financial services industry, law, or accounting any record you have will come up. |

I got arrested for shoplifting 2 years ago (one time big mistake) and was charged but not convicted and never plead guilty (courts were never involved).
I was just wondering if anyone had any input/advice or have any experience in this area? I feel like since its "theft" it could potentially hurt me since I'm applying in the accounting/finance industry. Yet I was never convicted...so when apps ask me if I was ever convicted, I can legally say no. Can this potentially deter me from employment??
I got an offer from Deloitte accounting and they will perform a background check once I accept...
