I am a recent finance graduate looking for a job in financial services. I have been offered a job by American Express Fin. Advisors. My concern is that I am 22 and I don't know how easy it will be to drum up clients that will take my advice. I am willing to work hard, but I just want to set myself up to succeed, and not stack the odds against myself. Should I look for a more technical finance position first (analyst etc.), to get the experience? Thanks |

I was offered a position at AMEX fin. advisors when i graduated last may, and I quickly rejected it. The salary is under $30K and is cut in half during your second year. The real problem is that they want you to not just be a traditional financial advisor, they want you to be a comprehensive planner that handles things like insursnce. I would think its tough to convice somone with a large amount of money to let a 20 something person manage it. Dont get me wrong, I really want to be a financial advisor too, but AMEX is a glorified AXA advisor. Stay Away. Im trying to get some experience and contacts, then i will try MorganStanley or something similar.
