I am looking into starting a career in the insurance industry. I have no prior experience. Would like to get involved in comm claims if possible. Anyone know of a company in the Portland area that may hire someone like myself. What would be a good way to get my foot in the door?
Pls e-mail replies. Thanks for your time & consideration. |

Before you jump in, I'd recommend you seriously think about why you want to get into claims. Traditionally insurers, despite their p.r. about claims service, in fact pay adjusters as little as possible, and bury them with as much work as they can get away with. I've been in it for over 12 years and see how most companies operate. They don't care about skill or quality of work, they simply want people to screw customers out of as much money as possible. The poor quality of "adjusters" is as bad as I've ever seen it. Most insurance companies are just hiring warm bodies, with practically no training or experience, and are paying them minimal salaries. The professionalism of the trade is going down the tubes.
The never ending turnover and catastrophes make it a very high stress job. Dealing with the public, most of whom feel like they can be as rude with you as they want, but demand just the opposite from you.
The only reason to be in claims is because it can offer a liveable wage, and you don't have to sell. But don't expect much more than that. If you haven't taken any Associate in Claims (AIC) classes that also may be helpful. Good luck.
