In Reply To: I graduated from biz school a few months ago. maybe b/c it wasn't a top tier school or b/c of the current situation, or both, I'm still without a job. i majored in finance in my MBA although i didn't have any finance experience. I thought i could get in with the degree but failed. Ive been really pondering over what i should do next. i'm thinking about taking the CFA text next June. or maybe i should get a master in finance just to show people that i'm specializing...? i browsed over some master's finance program (there aren't very many of them), and sawed some financial engineering (or/math.fin or quant.fin) programs, and they seem really ... different. what should i be doing? CFA or another degree? or both? if a degree, another ms. finance or rather m.s. fin. eng.? any advice appreciated. thanks!!!
Message: Your post could have been written by me. I also graduated a few months ago from a 2nd tier school with an MBA in finance (and no prior experience in the field) and got no job. I spent over $1k of my own money attending career fairs just to realize that it's simply not going to happen for me. Since my school is one of the few that offers an MSc in Finance, I decided to sign up for that and to take the CFA in June. But the reason I signed up for the MScFin is not because I feel I need more schooling in Finance, it's only because recruiters won't be looking at people like us anymore. Problem is, they discard your resume on the spot as soon as they see that past graduation date (if your school hadn't turned them off already). If I could offer any advise (not sure why you'd want it) I think you should sign up for the MScFin just to retain access to campus recruiting. You don't have to take a full course load anyways, and you could always drop out if you get a job before finishing the extra masters.
