In Reply To: I graduated from biz school a few months ago. maybe b/c it wasn't a top tier school or b/c of the current situation, or both, I'm still without a job. i majored in finance in my MBA although i didn't have any finance experience. I thought i could get in with the degree but failed. Ive been really pondering over what i should do next. i'm thinking about taking the CFA text next June. or maybe i should get a master in finance just to show people that i'm specializing...? i browsed over some master's finance program (there aren't very many of them), and sawed some financial engineering (or/math.fin or quant.fin) programs, and they seem really ... different. what should i be doing? CFA or another degree? or both? if a degree, another ms. finance or rather m.s. fin. eng.? any advice appreciated. thanks!!!
Message: I like the idea of showing that you're specializing in finance or at least serious that you want a career in finance as opposed to whatever you can get. Pursuing the CFA would give a good signal that you want to be a finance professional. On the other hand, it is a 3-year process (at least) and the test insn't until June so... other than signing up and telling people you're pursuing it there's not much you can do or get out of it. I'd go ahead and sign up if you are in fact serious about finance since the sooner you start the better and it's always easier to study when you're fresh out of school. More school? What you really need is experience, of course, getting that is the hard part. Maybe you should try to develop some kind of finance expertise outside of school? Or you could offer to do financial modeling for start-ups on the cheap just to get some references and experience under your belt and to make it look like you're actually working rather than hanging out in the bread line. Just some thoughts.
