I think a problem with the commercial banking business is that the salaries are attractive, but the variable compensation portion (i.e. bonus) often lag compared to Corporate or Investment Banking. Commercial Lenders often work just as many hours and the varaible pay is just not sufficient to make it worthwile.

That is so true. The Bank I work for recently decided to start a variable comp program which was an insult to us all. We put in just as many hours for 1/4 of the variable comp. . . .
I'm getting out of Commercial Banking.
