In Reply To: There are various paths you could potentially pursue in commercial banking. First off, the accounting career - for this you will need to find a position as a staff accountant at a CB. Your teller experience may or may not help - just depends on the hiring manager. If I read your message correctly (and you graduated about a year ago and still with no job), the longer you stay a teller, the less likely you are to get a job as an accountant or anything else. Get out of that position and into a "real" job ASAP. Second - internal audit. Your teller experience may be of some use here. It is a good starting point because you typically get to see a lot of different department without having to actually work in those department. Third - commercial lending credit analyst. Put your accounting knowledge to use crunching numbers on potential loans. This can lead to higher level jobs in credit analysis, business development, or even loan review. Fourth - trust department. While this is the least likely option, some banks hire accountants for their trust department. However, the typical hire is an experienced tax accountant. I hope you do find a good career fit in commercial banking. I have a similar background (undergraduate in acctg, etc.). I believe their will be a need for folks with good accounting skills in banking (especially within the next 5 to 10 years when many of the "gray hairs" start retiring).
Message: Hi, I just graduated with a double major in accounting and finance. Originally I wanted to get a job in commercial banking by getting into an analyst or development program like the ones they have at Wells or Comerica. I went to a small school and could not get a job in this area because of the current hiring conditions. Instead I will be starting the Becker CPA review course this summer and I landed a job as an auditor at a Big Four accounting firm in the Midwest. I was wondering if a CPA and financial audit experience would be valuable if I still wanted to pursue a career in credit analysis or commercial lending at a commercial bank in the future? I know the Big Four experience can be beneficial, but I will be looking for more work-life balance and a mixture of analysis and sales in the future. I noticed from previous postings that this is a similar path that you took in your career. Please let me know if this is possible and how the transition is. Thanks
