In Reply To: Without a lot of specifics to go on (yrs of experience, current location, educational background, possibility for relocation, etc.), I'll do my best to answer. The insurance underwriting is different from the underwriting/analysis performed in the industries you mentioned. Typically, a transition to commercial lending or investment banking would be done at the credit analyst or IB analyst position. However, if you have several years of experience in insurance, there are some firms/areas where that experience might be helpful. For instance, there are a few finance companies that specialize in providing acquisition financing for insurance agencies. Some finance companies or banks have divisions that concentrate on financing insurance companies and agencies. Also, most investment banks have FIG (Financial Industry Group) divisions that provide both investment banking (M&A and capital markets) and Equity Research for banking AND insurance companies. As far as PE firms and Hedge Funds, the experience would not be relevant unless you are able to find one that has a related industry focus. An internet search might turn up a few.
Message: Thank you! that's the kind of info i've been looking for. Can you name any of these "finance companies that specialize in providing acquisition financing for insurance agencies," or IB's that have a division that focuses on insurance companies. And even though my experience (2 yrs) has been doing the actual underwriting and financial analysis that goes into a policy, you really think finance companies may find this experience valuable when it comes to financing the actual insurance companies themselves??
