In Reply To: Hi, I have been looking out for a job for more than a year now. I have never worked here b4 , have come to this country a yr back with an MBA finance degree and almost 3 yrs work ex with a very reputed foreign bank in my country. Have been posting resume on all the boards that i can think of ! but no luck ! Can anyone give me any suggestions as to what to do? I have been a top performer throughout. Would really appreciate some genuine advice.. Thanks,
Message: You are top performer and that's why you kill your job. Most people, especially, IT people do not understand during depression, high performer kills the job but keep working very hard. So, why you think I am still working at Wall Street? Because I am NOT top performer. I always make sure I have enough jobs sitting in the queue before I really do something. I totally understand if my job is too easy to finish, and when I finish all my works, that's the time I would be laid off. Top performer not only kill your own job, but also kill others' job. Your manager may think you are good enough to handle three people's work, and laid of the other two of your peers. During depression period, no one dare to hire top performer because the top performer may came in and finish all the backlogs and kill everyone's job. Ok, let me give you some scenario. Three years ago, I had close to 100 projects in my hand, after 911, many were postponed and cancelled, and I have 60 projects left. One year later, down to 30 project, now only 10 projects. I don't let my people to be laid off by assigning twice man power on each project, why? I want everyone busy, and I want everyone have job. I assign less performers to act as backup of each project and learn. Later, when projects really got fewer and fewer. I switched around and assign the poor performer to do the project, and top performer as backup. Why? It would take much longer to finish the project. So, you now understand why I am still around and same as my people. Now there are more projects start coming, would I hire more people? Yes, I do, but I am afraid to hire a top performer because then s/he would kill most work of my team. I would just get someone who is not that smart but would loyal to me, and I will give him or her time to learn. Got it? So, do NOT mention you are top performer in your resume, do NOT make yourself look too good or too much experience. If you have 20 year experience, cut it down to just 5 year experience and put something irrelavent in your resume and ask for only entry level salary. But, don't worry, once you start working at Wall Street, you can keep looking for better and more pay job. How do you think?
