Cougarhunter,
I have a friend that applied to the FBI and is now working with the Secret Service. So he is knowledgable about both agencies. He stated that it's much like the military; that every three to four years you transfer, but it depends greatly on the needs of the FBI. If you first tour is in a big city, you may stay there because of the need, but if you go to a town like Knoxville, TN you probably will be moved. This is not to say staying in one place is impossible. As you gain seniority, you have more of a say on where you go or if you move at all, but the general feeling is that won't happen until 10 years into your career. If we assume that the average is 3 years, that's about 2.5 moves before you can settle down. |

That is exactly what I heard too. The recruiter I spoke with indicated that if you chose a "big city" for your first location, you will not have to move. However, if you are placed into a small/medium city, you will be transferred to a big city after 3 years. You will likely then stay in that city for 6 years, at which point you can apply for a transfer. Thanks for the reply!!
Question for you: How does a career in the Secret Service compare to this in terms of transfers and relocation? Just wondering if that would be any different?
