In Reply To: I'm am looking to set up a business for importing quality products into emerging markets as well as the U.S. All of the products would be manufactured and shipped from Asia (mainly China). I am just wanting to figure out what industries to focus on. So far, I can distribute stationary, gift novelties, generic electronics, toys, and apparel, but can look into your specific product interests. Is there anyone interested in working with me or is a retailer/wholesaler who would be interested in starting a partnership?
Message: Hi, I'm very interested in imports/exports to China. I believe that many opportunities for trade will emerge in the next few years as China implements WTO changes. Currently, I think the best opportunities will be in importing from China. Domestic demand in China is low, and there are still many difficulties for foreigners trying to enter the market. I recently talked with Forman Industries whose efforts to establish Subway and Pizza Factory in China failed from a lack of experience in the market (and large scale corruption). It seems to me that for someone starting out, importing may be a better choice. However, with WTO changes, there are new opportunities in agricultural exports to China. As for imports, the only idea I have is to import Chinese scrolls (traditional bamboo/landscape). This has risks that certain commodities would not: lack of market data (i.e., you can find trade stats on "T-shirts" from China but I could not find anything specific for scrolls), and I really don't know what the U.S. demand for these types of products might be. However, these can be purchased very inexpensively. Knowing Chinese and having been to China a few times, as well as dabbling in this market a little bit, I could find these types of goods at the lowest possible price with some effort. I'd like to here more of your ideas. nhudson@cfconsulting.com
