In Reply To: I have experience as a desktop publisher but I never would have expected I could be putting that skill to work from home. Could you email me some information. I am currently a stenographic transcriptionist, my background consists of 3 years of court reporting school and 5 years of executive administration. I work for myself from a home office transcribing taped dictation. I would love to learn about expanding my opportunities across the nation or even locally if I can, but it seems impossible to find diversity in the dictation I am transcribing. Is there any helpful hints you may have regarding what path I can take in getting me closer to my goal. Anything you know can help. Thanks, Elisha Fillis
Message: Hi Elisha, One of the most useful things I did in getting started in my business was networking. I was freelancing on the side while working full time. In my full time job I worked with a lot of independent consultants, so I let them know I freelanced if they ever had work for other clients (besides my employer) they needed help with. I also approached people when they left the company to move on to other opportunities. I also get work through a temp agency that specializes in the type of work I do, and I only do jobs for them that I can do from home. Business this year has not been great (for anyone!) but I have gotten fairly steady freelance work to supplement my part time income. I don't advertise, because what I do is so specialized. Networking is more efficient because my current clients know my capabilities, and put out the word to other people in their field. I would recommend joining any professional associations, attending classes, etc. to expand your network.
