I'm trying to start something as well- been doing a lot of research into things and I've found some good sites.
I would start on www.inc.com, Fortune Small Business, etc. Those magazines usually have some good articles and interviews.
One of the hardest things to do is get the ball rolling - it took me forever to get my LLC formed, the states website is confusing and you get the runaround a bunch of times. No wonder there are people charging so much to do all the paperwork for you...
I've found so far that starting a business is a lot like dominoes - you have to do step A before step B, etc. For example, I want a PO box to forward letters to- but in order to do that I needed a filing recipt from the dept. of state- and to get the filing reciept you have to file the articles of organization, etc....
And patents - forget about navigating the gov. patent site! You need to hire a lawyer for that stuff.
A good book to find forms, etc. is The Ultimate Guide to Forming an LLC (by Entrepenuers mag.) I also got a Harvard Review book of essays from starting your own business, etc.
Basically it all comes down to $$$. I'm bootstrapping my idea while working full time for an investment firm- if I had a couple of years income saved up things would be a lot easier...
oh well, starting a legit business isnt' easy or everyone would do it instead of being the robots corporate america is known for!
