In Reply To: Check out those global offices - you won't see any minorities in Korea, Taiwan, Japan, or China. Only in the US is holding up a diverse workforce viewed as good. Gov't and corporations are the least successful organizations in changing people's behaviors. The more gov't tries to change the way people think, the worse they make it. I don't need people to hire me because of my looks - I will succeed on my own or find/found a company that will allow me to succeed. Eventually it will be the monocultural asian societies that will need to adapt.
Message: A diverse work environment is not just one that has all the colors of the rainbow in it. It is not all about " how you look and what your socio-economic background is". There are a number of other characteristics you and your coworkers posess that can contribute to and/or hinder your success. It is the way you do things, how you think, your integrity, traditional/nontraditional background and being a team player or not being a team player. Ask the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How questions. You may really want to work for a company with the big stock options, but do your homework. What you don't know could be detrimental to your career. Set your standards high and don't settle for the mailroom clerk position - unless that is commom practice for the company you want to work for ie. everyone starts in the mail room or answering phones and works their way up. Ask to meet some of those people or find out how the person you would be reporting to started in the company. Gone are the days when one would work for a company for decades and work their way up (not saying it can't happen) but not that likely.
