In Reply To: The first follow-ups were about my availability in general and we were both looking for the right time and place to coincide. I was about to leave a county job, which I have since done. The first time it got specific, as far as a possible project, we were just about to begin discussing salary and benefits. There was a project that she planned to help bid and she thought she had a place for me. The next time I talked to her, she said the higher ups had decided to go another way and partner with another firm. That was August. The next time I talked to her, she said she was watching how things were shaping up in another state and she would let me know. That was last fall. I waited a few months and after not hearing, I sent her an e-mail to let her know I was still alive and interested. That was just before Christmas. No response to that yet. As far as a position, we had been talking about Deloitte sub-contracting me due to my experience with the client end of designing applications and business process reengineering. That would have been on an hourly rate basis. The other option we discussed was being hired into the firm at a level commensurate with my expertise. I do not recall what the position is called, but I was told that there is a career path that a FEW in Deloitte consulting arena take when they are not going to follow through to Partner level. I was told that this is a progression from the Manager realm.
Message: So to summarize, you may be brought in as a contractor or a position within what sounds like the new-ish Specialist track. My take simply validates the obvious: unless there is ample work forecasted down the pipeline, there is no business need to bring in a costly resource. The caveat is that you are only communicating with one person and they may simply not be aware of all the other opportunities available. My suggestion is to be aggressive and find the partners that cover your industry area. Contact them directly.
