An MBA is not required to advance in the technical practices. That doesn't mean they don't support it. If you get good ratings and want to pursue an MBA, it is perfectly possible to get firm sponsorhip. Just takes a little more legwork for an SA compared to a BA. Plenty of people do it every year though.
