In Reply To: in Big 4 land. Turnover is at record levels and when a big 4 firm looses experienced professionals, that's a big investment walking out the door. Good manager level professionals are in big demand on the outside thanks to all that training their employer provided - there's the real value to those years of slogging away in cubeland.
Message: There is good training possible that can increase your marketability in the future. After years of long hours, little sleep, high blood pressure, not seeing your family, you can leave the firm with the promise of a slightly-improved chance of getting a better job. You can also spend years working as a team to build a good working environment and quality relationships with clients that generally (thanks in part to our friend in Nebraska) do not violate the law or discredit the profession, only to wake up one morning and find that it was all for naught. Bob Scoble of Microsoft commented that the "blog" became its current phenomenon in part because, in the wake of the tech bubble bursting, there were a large number of software engineers unemployed with too much time on their hands, who wanted a forum to view into organizations and thereby hold the businesses accountable, force improvement, and pierce their p.r. veil. I can't speak from experience about what PWC is like, but there is a culture clash here. I've heard of it referred to as the Andersenization of the firm. Before you sell out the best years of your life, make sure you know what you're getting into and make sure you are compensated for it. Frankly, if I hear another Deloitte-legacy partner say something like "Even knowing what I know today, I still would vote in favor of the acquisition," I think I'll vomit. There must be a better way for you. For me, I'll work for change through market forces. Adam Smith would be proud.
