In Reply To: I wouldn't write off DC entirely. A lot of good companies are based around DC, VA, MD, etc. and a lot of good work comes out of that area. It is also one of the firm's foci and you could be well positioned to attract the attention of someone worthwhile. It is possible that the firm reserves a certain number of positions for local candidates both as a matter of strategy (to maintain its reputation and connections for future recruiting), and because the candidates already know that they like the area and have friends and a social network in town (so they will stay around longer) and it is potentially cheaper than having to move an out-of-towner (I don't know if we pay to move new recruits). Possible ways of going around the recruiter include identifying someone important in the office that you can reach out to who will respond. Find a partner that came from the same school you did and donates to the annual fund; find a friend of your father's cousin; whatever. In addition, you might tell the recruiter that you will be in town for other interviews on certain days (whether true or false). If you pay for your own trip, the recruiter has little to lose by lining up a couple of people for you to talk to. It also sends the message to the recruiter that you are serious about going to the tri-state area and that you might end up with the competition (whether true or not).
Message: Thank you Benevolus for your help. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I am going to speak with my recruiter and let him know that I will be in New York for a couple other interviews and see if that may help. I am somewhat shocked that such a large firm with offices across the globe wouldn't consider out of state recruits. They would be missing out on some great talent from some great schools. This lack of interests surprises me because I am 22 years old, I'll have my Masters degree, and by the time I start in the fall I should have most of my CPA exam complete. I am extremely ambitious and I will break my back to reward the company that gives me an oppurtunity to prove myself. Right now I am just hoping for the oppurtunity. Thanks again for your help.
