I am currently employed at one of the other Big Four firms. I'm a second year tax associate. As many do, I feel somewhat underpaid(45k in year 2). I working towards an MST and it will be finished by next fall. What are people's thoughts about Deloitte's tax practice? Is it doing well? Are the seniors and mangaers good to work for? What could I expect salary wise if I came in with almost 2 years exp and an MST? Any help appreciated. |

I have a low opinion of Deloitte (aka Andersen) as a practice. Historically, they've touted their commitment to "The People of Deloitte", and then turned around and acquired the Andersen practice, effectively creating a mirror tax department, until the inevitable blood-letting. The Andersen folks, through their blind and cult-like commitment to each other and their failed organization and values, stuck together and managed to dominate the tax group. This, of course, creates a disonance with the values of the overall, as well as the historic organization, but at your level, I would consider that unimportant, if you like the people you've met.
Your future pay will usually be built on your current pay. The more you make now, the more you can demand in the future. Rarely, unless you choose a change in lifestyle, will you take a step back in pay. If your current firm doesn't have enough respect for you to pay you what the market will bear, go somewhere else. If you end up leaving Deloitte, you will at least have an earnings history that justifies more money in your next job.
