In Reply To: Your work/life balance differs considerably based on your job within the company. If you are working in strategic research, hours during a typical week go from 9-7 p.m., sometimes a little later. When you are finishing a research run, you will typically be working 70-100 hour weeks for the last month (some weekends and late nights if you are trying to make deadlines). On the upside, the firm pays for your dinner and your cab if you're here after 8 p.m. Member services--hours can vary considerably, depending on what time of year it is. Typically, it's about 50-70 hours per week. However, if you are trying to renew clients or are trying to deal with situations that come up at the last minute, it can be longer. Marketing--the hours can be pretty long depending on the time of year (i.e., end of quarter trying to meet goal). They spend a lot of time on the road, and so by the time they get to a hotel, they typically stay up late finishing off emails, follow-ups to meetings, etc.
Message: I was in marketing. The lifestyle is not too bad. The real downside is the cheapness of the firm. Basically coach class on the cheapest discount airlines, even for international flights and the shabbiest hotels for accomodations. What is worse is that I had to make all of my travel arrangements while making sure that they were the cheapest flights available. I have nothing against saving costs, but it does get very tiresome after awhile. Certainly not a job for someone with a family. The research jobs are most likely much better than a typical consulting gig as travel really is minimal.
