Message: You could end up at Harvard Law School, like me. Or at Oxford University on a Marshall scholarship studying International human rights work, like my best friend. It's not the kind of degree that counts, but how well you do. Once you start taking courses and meeting people, you'll see what avenues you have to explore. There are too many things you can do with an international studies degree to list them all here. You high school students put way too much emphasis on undergrad majors. It's not the definitive choice of your career path. The reality is that there are M.D.'s who majored in Spanish and M.B.A.'s who majored in Art History out there. You don't need a Bio. degree to go to med school, and you certainly don't need an Econ. degree to go to business school. I had a classmate who did an Archaeology degree (loved scuba diving into old shipwrecks) and then decide to become a doctor in his senior year. He took a year-long program in the science courses he needed, and is currently working on his M.D. Don't stress yourself about "what I want to grow up to be" right now. You have time, and the adults aren't lying when they say that you're certain to change your mind 10-12 times in college, if not throughout your life. Doing well in undergrad at a subject you're interested is more important for building a solid educational foundation, rather than choosing the perfect major for the perfect career. Explore your interests, choose what you like and do best at, work it out from there. Good luck!
