UT undergrad sounds a bit insecure. Yaah, you got into other schools besides UT. Yaah, you chose to go to UT. Yaah, you have a friend who makes as much as Ivy Leaguers.
But on average (law of averages) the Ivy Leaguers are making a hell of a lot more money than the average UT grad and will have significantly more opportunities.
If you were such a brilliant student, how come you didn't win any scholarships to attend the Ivies or go to Rice, which is pretty cheap? |

I think it really depends on your major. For engineering, particulary ECE, it really does not matter whether you go to a state or private U, since field experience counts so much more. Sure you'll probably have the opportunity of gaining a more or less better network of connections at mit or stanford than Podunk state U, but simply HAVING opportunities and PURSUING them are two different things. Attending a no name school does not necessarily preclude you from anything.
btw, Avg starting offers for ECE majors are usually in the hi40s to mid 50s EVERYWHERE, the former being the salary of a hypothetical podunk state u grad, the latter being salary offers for a grad of a more prestigious private school. The >90%tile salaries are skewed toward more reputable schools, but the average tends to stay the same everywhere. When it comes down to it, if u get accepted with practically no aid to a good priv engineering school, your ego is driving you to make that $120Thou plunge more than anything else. But hey, at least you'll be able to boast to other engineers that you went to this awesome brand-name school.
like i said, only for engineers.
