I was puzzled by the number of students apply to the University of Chicago college. THe number of applicants to the University of Chicago is just 50% of those applied to Harvard and Stanford. I have too hypotheses:
1. University of Chicago is not as prestigeous as Ivies even though Chicago is better (in terms of quality of education) than most of the Ivies except Harvard (possibly Princeton).
University of Chicago produced 73 Nobel prize winners than any other university on this planet. MIT produced 55 (counting faculty, students, researchers).
2. University of Chicago is one of the three most demanding schools in the country (Caltech, Chicago, MIT). High school kids in general do not want the challenges. So that is why they do not want to apply to Chicago.

You're absolutely right, Chicago is the best school for those who like to excel, understand, and be successful.
However, when you hear anything in the media, it's usually about Stanford, harvard, Yale. Chicago doesn't have such a BRAND NAME (thank god or the competition would be even tougher)
