My friend was a graduate of MIT in computer science and recently moved to
New Haven for an internet start up.
According to the wall street journal, December 9, 1998, New Haven has the
country's second highest concentration of high tech jobs, after San Jose,
CA. also, Business Week gives very high ratings to New Haven's economy, and
the city has actually grown in size over recent years.
All in all the fact that Yale has 700 transfer applicants and 14,000
freshman applicants for 1,300 spots must mean that New Haven, at least
downtown, must be a pretty desirable place. New Haven makes every short
list of the top 5 or 10 richest metropolitan areas, and is the cultural
center of the richest state in the nation (Connecticut), with more
Tony-Award winning theaters than any city except New York City itself.
From what I've seen of it, the restaurants and theaters I've been to there,
and the number of apartments being constructed there, I'd say it is one of
the most desirable small cities in the country, which is unfortunate for
Yalies who wish to buy apartments off campus....
It's a very fine city and in terms of theaters, sports, restaurants,
wealth, etc., it could easily be considered a major city. However, it's
also close to New York City so is competing with some of that market. The
benefit of Yale is that it is located immediately downtown, across from
City Hall, where it was placed after being founded in 1701, and therefore
the entire downtown just sits right around the Yale campus. Therefore, the
downtown is very cosmopolitan with its numerous theaters, upscale
restaurants, nightclubs, boutiques, diners, bookstores, jewelry stores,
bars, jazz clubs and coffeeshops (it didn't used to be in the 1970's and
early 1980's, but with the construction of thousands of luxury apartments
it is now)-- but it's also located adjacent to the Yale campus. Personally
I think it's one of the best college towns, although I've only lived there
for a month aside from numerous visits there to see friends.
