I find it personally amusing that Brown University is debated on a career planning website. Brown, regardless of the criticism it garners, still has a very self-selecting student body that chooses to attend it because they are more driven by personal satisfaction than by conforming to social expectations.
Part of the student body is extremely wealthy, and maybe, is there solely because of that. However, there is a large percentage of students who had the opportunity to turn down higher prestige schools because of the unique atmosphere at Brown. People are more socially conscious, people are more open and interactive, than at other Ivy League schools.
I'm convinced that there a quality at Brown that turns out hundreds of personally fulfilled individuals, rather than socially respected investment bankers (read: Harvard), who have a mess of personal life that they can't quite understand.
Brown's system of education knocks down walls that students have built in their minds, and to that extent, opens opportunities beyond traditional paths that are forced down upon those succumbing to and seeking social acceptance.
It's a great place.
