The US Equal Opportunity Commission discriminated against 28 LAtino custodians when it did an employment verification check based on their Latin-sounding names. Uw discrimiated against Hispanic employees as a class by singling out employees with surnames taht appeared to them to be "un-American" or "foreign" for social security number checks. |

UW has settled the suit brought filed by 6 januotrs who were fired after UW officals singled them out by their Latino names during a SSN check. The UW has agreed to pay $24,000 to the Interfaith Coalition for Worker Justice of South Central Wisconsin, which will establish a drelief fund for the workers. The pres of the Amer Federation of State, County, and Municpal Employees Local 171 stated he "was disappointed that the amount of money is so small. The unversity calculated that they are a rich institution and we are not and we did not have the wherewithal to sue them in federal court. The fact that they gave any money at all was not because they would have been dragged into federal court, but because they would be dragged into the court of public opinion."
