In Reply To: I am a recent Berkeley grad and it is true, Berkeley profs rarely adhere to "recommended grade ranges" established by their depts. Grade inflation does not exist here, whether you are studying EECS or History. The exception is the Business School, which does its fair share to boost the likelihood of its students to make it in consulting or i-banking. (This trend seems to be true for business programs at ivies, stanford, etc as well.) Thus, it's not so much whether Berkeley "3.5" is "worth" more than Stanford's "3.5" -- just do the slacker major, business! (and you can get the 4.0 and the women!)
Message: I wasn't aware that Haas was participating in the whole grade inflation thing. I actually think that's a good sign--it's good for the students, obviously, when they're competing against so many other candidates from other grade-inflated schools. I agree, business is the major of choice. You get a 4.0, the women, and of course the financial payoff..
