How about a little perspective from the other side of the world. Just my two cents...
Where I come from, we have a whole array of different categories of schools starting from when you are a teeny weeny kid. Mostly it starts to matter from highschool doesnt it?
'Private catergory' school are known as 'Independents'. My parents had to pay a triple digit fee/mth while the public/govt schools u foot 3bucks/mth.
Then I went to a public tertiary institution (culture shock!) and now i'm in the University of Sydney. (Though home is actually Singapore)
Why did my parents put me in the highschool I am? And why am I going to one of the ivies of Oz in a private methodist residential college? 1. Network. 2. Network. 3. Network.
or Alumni as someone put it. Not so much what the difference in academia thats (not) covered, but the enviroment in which you are in. Who are your peers? Who will be by your side when you're in the working world.
Sure, the public school offers a 'real life', but I suspect those who are in private schools are nurtured for a different role in life which is why enviroment and the ppl around make the difference.
