In Reply To: it is harder to get into those schools, so on average, they get better students, better students are better students for two reasons, either they are smarter or they work harder, duh
Message: Think about it this way. An Ivy League degree is a signal to prospective employers, graduates schools, and soceity at large that the holder of the degrees has been held to a rigorous standard and has met the challenges of an advance college curriculum. Additionally, you should never underestimate the deep and powerful network that is part of the Ivy League. Young schools like Duke and Stanford are centuries behind the traditions and establishment of the Ivy League. And yes the "young" comments are true. Check the founding dates of Duke and Stanford. Harvard was founded in 1636, that's 140 years before our country became independent. The Ivy network is deeper than our constitutional history. That's a power element that should never be overlooked.
