In Reply To: A recent Newsweek article stated that some interns are worth 20 bucks an hour. That's more money than a lot of college grads make. Some interns are being provided with health insurance, stock options and more. What's the difference between new employees and interns? Any comments?
Message: I worked at a software company in Oakland, CA this summer. Interns are expected to do the same amount of work at the full time hires, and truth is, some interns can do more useful work and be more talented than many experienced "veterans" of the industry. Why? Because we work hard. Because we're used to staying up till 4:30 in the morning to get our robots working, then waking up at 7:30am to make our 8 am class, and repeating. I'm not doing this sort of work, and immersing myself in technology day in and day out for nothing. In the software industry, it's not your college degree that matters. It's your own internal motivation to push limits, and do something that hasn't been done before. I'm not expecting a 50K salary when I graduate, I expect to have accrued about 3 years of work experience and research projects, along with a few patents by the time I graduate. I may even release a software product or two. And I plan on securing an 80K+ starting salary in a high up position with a company that knows what I'm worth. That is of course, if I don't start my own company. If you think this is arrogant, you haven't seen what the human brain can do. Harnessesing that is priceless.
