What's the long-term goal? |

I could see why DO would want to keep you DO. If I'm really interested in "X" and not at all in "Y" (but both are DC based) then is there some point in the process where I get to say, "is it possible that my work focus on X" ?
Again, I'm at the start of this so if the question seems uninformed, I'm guilty as charged. |

I think it depends on what you want to do long-term too. Now if you are young (early/mid 20s) then it might be possible to work in the DO and then transfer over to the DI (with some difficulty as said above), or it might be better to go straight into the DI, get thier training and become an expert from the get go instead of delaying it a few years.
Do you want to do analysis type work or feild work? Or something inbetween?
