In Reply To: they don't give you a cover, you need to come up with your own story. i got pretty lucky because i used a certain govt agency during my whole process (like explaining why I was going to VA a couple of times), then it turned out that the investigators coming around asking questions were employed by that exact agency. i certainly didn't volunteer ANY info to most people, but i mean i had to tell my roommate, boss, certain classmates who were contacts something. they either didn't know much about this agency or didn't care, so they never asked follow up questions. i just said it was a boring desk job in the DC area that could eventually have me overseas.
Message: State Department is the best bet. No one outside the Beltway really understands what it is anyway. I do wonder about NOCs. Another approach is that your being hired by a goverment contractor and this is just part of the process, and you have not really decided whether to accept the job or not.
